Relax Those Lines & Wrinkles …You’ll Look Great

Dr. Dembny is Milwaukee’s Botox Cosmetic Specialist

BOTOX® Cosmetic was approved in 2003. Since then Dr. Dembny has been using Botox Cosmetic in his practice to prevent and reduce the lines and wrinkles associated with facial aging. injectable treatments have been a component of Dr. Dembny’s practice for more than 15 years, and he is one of the most experienced injectors in Wisconsin.

Lines and Wrinkles

BOTOX® Cosmetic is used for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles of the face caused by overactive muscles. The injections relax the facial muscles and reduce the visible frown lines and crow’s feet wrinkles and furrows. The use of BOTOX® Cosmetic is ideal for improving lines and wrinkles of the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows, and the crow’s feet area around the eyes because these lines and wrinkles are directly caused by underlying muscle contractions. Relaxing these muscles with BOTOX® Cosmetic reduces the folding and creasing of the overlying skin, and thereby softens and reduces the lines and wrinkles in these areas. BOTOX® Cosmetic may also be used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the underarms, hand, or feet.

According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 4,597,886 BOTOX® treatments were performed in the US in 2018, making this the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure. BOTOX® treatments for facial lines remain, far and away, the most popular cosmetic procedure; nothing else comes close.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for BOTOX®?

Individuals who most commonly receive BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments are usually between the ages of about 25 to 70 years old. This treatment works nicely in younger individuals because it prevents repeated wrinkling of the facial skin and subsequent deepening of the facial lines. BOTOX® Cosmetic is frequently used in combination with soft tissue fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Sculptra, and is a nice complementary treatment for patients who have undergone a face lift, blepharoplasty, chemical peels, or laser resurfacing. It is safe, effective, and the treatment only takes a few minutes.  BOTOX® Cosmetic is not recommended for those individuals who are pregnant, have a neurologic disease, or are taking aminoglycosides (ex: gentamicin, streptomycin) or other medicines that interfere with neurologic transmission.

When Will You See Results?

The full effect of a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will not be present for 5 to 14 days following injection. The muscle relaxation is reversible and lasts for 3 – 6 months (average 4 months), depending upon the number of previous treatments. A “memory response” may develop with previous injections.

What is a BOTOX® session like?

A BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is performed in the office by our physicians and provides dramatic results within days. We use a very tiny needle for BOTOX® injections. Most patients say the injections feel like a slight pinprick, and don’t feel the need for any numbing cream. But we can provide that if you would like. Otherwise, your session usually takes just 15 minutes or so. BOTOX® is commonly used to treat frown lines, crow’s feet wrinkles, forehead lines, wrinkle lines on the nose, vertical lines around the lips, and platysma bands in the neck. If you would like to schedule a consultation to discuss whether BOTOX® Cosmetic therapy is right for you please contact our office.

How Often You Should Receive BOTOX®

Most patients opt to have BOTOX® injected every 4 to 6 months. Most patients who are consistent with their treatment receive about the same amount of BOTOX® each time. In a few cases, some people notice that their results tend to last longer after they’ve had several treatments; this may be due to increased muscle relaxation but is also likely related to a change in expression behavior.

What to Avoid After Your Session

It’s important to not rub the injection sites for 4-6 hours after your session. Rubbing can cause the BOTOX® to migrate to an unintended muscle creating problems such as a droopy eyelid.

When Do People Start Having BOTOX® Injections

The FDA has approved BOTOX® for the ages of 18-65; but patients older than 65 years of age can certainly receive BOTOX® if it is appropriate. Most people opt to have their first BOTOX® treatment between the ages of 35-40. However, there is a trend for younger people, ages 25-35, to use BOTOX® to prevent lines and wrinkles, rather than treating them when they already exist. The sooner Botox is started, the less likely a wrinkle is to form in that area. It is thought that BOTOX® use in your late 20s can help you train your facial muscles not to move as much to help prevent some future skin wrinkling.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatments for Hyperhidrosis (Severe Sweating)

BOTOX® Cosmetic is also FDA-approved for the treatment of severe underarm sweating that is not adequately managed with topical agents. As a medical condition, severe underarm sweating is caused by overactive sweat glands and is known as severe Primary Axillary Hyperhidrosis. In hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds the body’s normal requirements for cooling. This is an embarrassing problem that is often refractory to other treatment modalities. People suffering from primary axillary hyperhidrosis are very self-conscious and struggle with clothing layers, colors, and choices in an attempt to conceal the wet underarm stains. If underarm sweating is significantly interfering with your daily activities and antiperspirants and deodorants haven’t worked, you may be a candidate for BOTOX® treatments. BOTOX® works well to control hyperhidrosis of the axillary region and it is the most common area treated for hyperhidrosis. Results typically last 6-9 months. Patients are more confident in their daily lives, and thrilled with the results.

If you would like to schedule a consultation to discuss how BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments can help you with underarm sweating, please call our office at (414) 443 0033.
